Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my gums bleeding? Pay attention to how you are brushing. Are you brushing aggressively? Is your toothbrush too hard? Or have you started a new flossing routine? These are the most common reasons for bleeding gums. Another culprit is gingivitis- the early stage of gum disease. Gingivitis is when plaque build up is irritating and inflaming the gum tissue. This build up can harden and become tartar. If left untreated it can become periodontal disease- which is a more severe infection that can cause damage to the bone supporting your teeth. If your gums look swollen, bright red or purplish, or your gums are tender when you brush, floss, or eat, it might be time to talk to your dentist about gum disease.
What are the common signs of periodontal disease? The most common signs of periodontitis are persistent bad breath, red, swollen or bleeding gums, receding gums, pain when chewing and loose or shifting teeth.
What should I do if I think I have periodontal disease? If you have any of the symptoms above, please schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. When periodontal disease is left untreated you risk shifting teeth or irreversible tooth loss. Periodontal disease (chronic oral inflammation) left untreated can also cause that bacteria to enter the bloodstream, elevating the risk of cardiovascular disease, poorly controlled diabetes, dementia, and pregnancy complications.
